both exoplanets, wasp-121b and wasp-121, were observed by the nasa hubble telescope. we analyzed and calibrated the data and reduced the transmission spectra using the open-source eclipse spectral utility for light curves and images (esuli) and the atlas application.

we then used esuli to model and phase fold the data, generating a global temperature map for each planet. the model consists of the parameterized atmosphere and the thermal emissivity of the planet, and its surface and atmospheric parameters. the planetary parameters were tuned as described in methods. we fit the model to the data simultaneously, while penalizing the errors in the phase timeseries. we adopted a markov chain monte carlo (mcmc) method, using the hyperopt implementation. the best-fit model and the estimated systematic errors on the data are shown in fig. 3 for wasp-121b and in fig. 1c for wasp-121. wasp-121b is a hot super-earth with a radius of 1.63 0.03, a mass of 5.9 0.3, a temperature of 2,500 150, and a circular orbit at a radius of 0.0185 0.0001, confirming its classification as a hot jupiter exoplanet. wasp-121b has a planet-to-star radius ratio of 0.0557 0.0012 and shows prominent phase curves with a clear brightness dip every orbit, making it the most easily detected hot jupiter detected to date.
the non-transiting planet wasp-121c was identified by the euler programme, which tracks the transit signals in time series of images obtained with the high contrast instrument for the hubble space telescope ( the a-greater-trio-of-planets page ) (fig. 4 ). it has a radius of 1.70 0.02, a mass of 6.1 0.6, a temperature of 1,800 150, and a circular orbit at a radius of 0.028 0.001. wasp-121c has a planet-to-star radius ratio of 0.0572 0.0016 and is at a separation of 0.24 0.01 from the star, placing it in the habitable zone. the time series of images was obtained on 29 july 2017 as part of the euler programme during a primary observation of a transit of wasp-121b. the data were processed and calibrated using the atlas application, and the best-fit model was determined using the
