Good grief, what time is it? The yule log in the fireplace may be a metaphor for burning digital information for data visualization designers. We can use the yule log to start a critical conversation about how we consume information and that should lead to better data visualizations.
The yule log is as old as the Yule itself. The legend of the yule log was brought to the UK from Scandinavia by the Norse. It is believed that the first yule log was used in the bed of a wealthy woman who had recently married. The log was burned the first winter to protect the woman and her husband against evil forces.
The yule log is a very large log of firewood which is burned for its heat and light. In the United States and Canada it is traditionally placed in the fireplace during the Christmas season for many to enjoy heat as the cold winter weather approaches. It is traditionally the largest log in the fireplace and the ashes and embers are raked out periodically to save the wood for the year.
Yule Logs was a downloadable visualization for Windows Media Player. It originally appeared in Windows Media Player 8. This visualization featured a fireplace and was seasonal for the winter holidays. This visualization could be found by installing the Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP and for the Winter Fun Pack 2004 for Windows XP. However, the Winter Fun Pack 2004 for Windows XP is no longer available for download since 2016. And the Windows Media Bonus Pack has long since vanished.
