Now, scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles have identified a new virus, named Movarivirus, that may cause severe diseases in humans, including meningitis, blood poisoning and encephalitis.
Many viruses, from smallpox to measles, flu to Ebola, are known to cause severe diseases in humans. But viruses that affect only animals have not been well documented.
Movarivirus infects protists, unicellular organisms that include algae, plants and bacteria. It is the first-known virus to infect a class of organisms called protists. The virus is estimated to be between 100 and 500 years old.
"We just discovered this virus because of a new technology that's recently become available," said John Moran, assistant professor in the department of microbiology and immunology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "It's a really exciting discovery, because when you identify a new virus you usually get a different disease, compared to other viruses that have been identified."
Movarivirus was identified in the fecal samples of two primates, one of which is from South Africa and the other from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Morbillivirus, another virus, can cause a similar disease in humans. Morbilliviruses spread by the same host organisms as movariviruses, but the way they are transmitted is unknown. Both viruses were isolated in cell cultures, and the same molecular techniques used to isolate the virus were also used to identify human virus strains in patients.
Movi-like viruses in wild animals
The researchers found another type of virus related to movarivirus in wild primates of the genus Cercopithecus. The viruses had a genetic sequence that was 95 percent similar to that of movarivirus, but 0b46394aab
