The Belbin Team Roles theory distinguishes nine Team Roles that describe how people behave when they are working as part of a team. According to the theory, every person has a preferred, manageable and least preferred role [1].
In addition to the nine different types of team roles, there are three other types of behaviour that people can display as part of a work group. Those are very important, as all the Team Roles are based on the behaviour of the entire team. Team members can be an activator, a good follower, or a contributor. These three types of behaviour are based on three different traits of behaviour. Activators are people who are most comfortable as team leaders.
The least preferred role is the one in which the person feels least comfortable, less skilled, and least effective. Team members in the least preferred role spend a lot of time on tasks they dislike, and often feel ineffective in that role.
The manageable role is the one that the person is most skilled in and has worked in most often in the past. Team members in the manageable role are usually at their best when they are following the leader's instructions and fulfilling the group's tasks.
The theory is based on the premise that there is a link between the psychological traits of the team members and the successful outcome of the project that they are involved in. Team members with distinctive behavioural patterns can, through their behaviour in a team, be shown to have specific roles. This allows the team leader and those managing the team to monitor its members' behaviour, and to promote or discourage particular types of behaviour. Work teams that are balanced and collaborative will be more successful, and will be more productive and more likely to achieve specific objectives.
The theory is also interesting for individuals because it helps to define their own position on the scale of all possible behavioural patterns.
