How to Join Points in Illustrator CS3

How to Join Points in Illustrator CS3

If you are working with vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator CS3, you may want to join two or more points on a path to create a closed shape or a smooth curve. There are different ways to join points in Illustrator CS3, depending on the type of path and the result you want.

In this article, we will show you how to use the Join command, the Average command, and the Pen tool to join points in Illustrator CS3. We will also explain how to find your serial number if you need to reinstall or activate your software.

Using the Join Command

The Join command is the simplest way to join two points on an open path. To use it, follow these steps:

  • Select the path with the Selection tool (V) or the Direct Selection tool (A).

  • Choose Object > Path > Join or press Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+J (Mac OS).

  • If the points are not aligned, a dialog box will appear asking you to choose how to join them: Corner or Smooth. Choose Corner to create a straight line between the points, or Smooth to create a curved line.

  • Click OK to join the points.

Note: You can only join two points at a time with this method. If you want to join more than two points, you need to repeat the process for each pair of points.

Using the Average Command

The Average command is useful when you want to join two or more points that are close together but not exactly aligned. This command will move the points to an average position before joining them. To use it, follow these steps:

  • Select the points you want to join with the Direct Selection tool (A). You can select multiple points by holding down Shift and clicking on each point.

  • Choose Object > Path > Average or press Ctrl+Alt+J (Windows) or Command+Option+J (Mac OS).

  • A dialog box will appear asking you to choose which axis to average: Horizontal, Vertical, or Both. Choose the option that best suits your design.

  • Click OK to average and join the points.

Using the Pen Tool

The Pen tool (P) is a versatile tool that allows you to create and edit paths in Illustrator. You can also use it to join points on different paths or on the same path. To use it, follow these steps:

  • Select the Pen tool (P) from the Tools panel.

  • Move the cursor over the first point you want to join. You will see a small circle next to the cursor, indicating that you can close the path by clicking on that point.

  • Click on the first point to close the path.

  • If you want to join another point on a different path, move the cursor over that point. You will see a small slash next to the cursor, indicating that you can join the paths by clicking on that point.

  • Click on the second point to join the paths.

Finding Your Serial Number

If you need to reinstall or activate your Illustrator CS3 software, you will need your serial number. Your serial number is a 24-digit code that identifies your product and license. You can find your serial number in one of these places:

  • On the product packaging or disc case.

  • In your Adobe account, under Plans & Products > View all > Products > View your products.

  • In your email receipt from Adobe or an authorized reseller.

  • In Illustrator CS3, choose Help > About Illustrator (Windows) or Illustrator > About Illustrator (Mac OS). Your serial number will appear in the splash screen that opens.
